Thoughts on the Future

In the future
we’ll live on a leafy street —
but somewhere laughs
still filter up through the
floorboards.

Maybe the sirens
will have dimmed a bit?
And I will spend less time
staring at the walls
since summer will not mean
roaches.

It will not be
irresponsible at all
when I bring freshly-cut
flowers home on Sundays —
and I’ll still think of
Clarissa each time I do it.

I will own enough glassware
that I can let a cup
slip out of my hands
into the soapy sink and
shatter.
